football (soccer) = greatest sport in the world.

let me be quick to note that when i used the word football i’m speaking of the REAL game of football.  the sport you primarily play with your feet.  hence, it’s name is football.  somehow in america we decided to call this sport soccer.  calling this soccer is equally as stupid as not using the metric system in america.  billions of people in the world call the game football so we aren’t going to.  it would make way too much sense to call the worlds most popular sport it’s actual name.  instead americans have stolen the sports name, football, and designate for a sport that is primarily played with hands.  (note: i believe american football should be called handball, and what we call handball on school playgrounds be called wall ball.  just a thought)  however, for the sake of my readers i’ll refer to the sport as soccer and i will refer to american football (i.e., the nfl) as football.

anyway…

i know i have several friends that have already been enlightened to the fact that soccer is the greatest sport in the world.  i’m not going to try to explain to the brain damaged football players (aka handball players, see above paragraph for explanation) why this is a true statement.  there are many evidences i thought of posting on why the title of this post is true, but i really think it comes down to two facts.

1. steroids cannot make you a world class soccer player.  steroids can take a really good football or baseball player and make them great.  however, no drug in the world can make you a great soccer player.  simply being stronger will not help anyone’s team win more games or allow that person to score more goals.  there is too much balance between required intelligence, athleticism, and team play to allow a drug to make or break a game.

2. 2009 super bowl = 98.6 million viewers.  2008 world series game 1 = 10.1 million viewers.  2006 world cup final = 715.1 million viewers.  (note: the 2006 world cup tournament was viewed by an estimated 26.29 billion non-unique viewers.  which means if i watched two different soccer games i count as two people.  and that was only the 4th ranked watched world cup in history.)  it is the most watched sport in the world, and arguably (and most likely) the most played sport in the world.  if the world deems this sport, more so than any other, as a cross cultural way of celebrating and enjoying life, than i find it safe to say it is the greatest sport in the world.

it may not be the most popular, watched, or liked sport in american.  in the bigger picture, though, i would find it near impossible to claim a greater sport in the world.

Steroids is all about recovery. It affects athletes of different sports in different ways. So I will say that argument is flawed. Although I use the same logic for Ice Hockey. However it isn’t to the same effect as other sports.

Also may I suggest Throwball so as too not start a chain of games changing names.

my understanding is that steroids do help recover faster but also provide a platform for unnatural muscular growth.

good call on the throwball. i just like handball b/c it sounds wimpier haha.

I think I’m gonna agree with Evan on the steroid thing. Cyclists, track stars, and baseball players take steroids more for the recovery/endurance aspect of it than to gain muscle. Throwball players might take it more for the muscle gain but even then those guys need to recover after grinding it out for 4 hours each sunday.

And about the who futbol vs. throwball thing…futbol is definitely a global sport, throwball is not. That’s why throwball is the greatest american sport and futbol is the greatest global sport. But Americans tend to think everything American is the best in the world…guess that’s our arrogance.

Sorry, Caluza, “Handball” is still the greatest sport in the world. As much I appreciate and like soccer, Football takes the kind of skill that being big can give you. Soccer, takes a kind of skill that comes from being quick. Steroids can also greatly effect Soccer plaer,

My “favorite” part about dive-ball….errrr, futbol…is when players barely get touched and fall down in a heap on the field and then cover their face with their hands (as if getting tapped on the leg has somehow made them bleed from the eye). Until there is less crying in futbol, I’m not watching it on TV unless the Yanks are playing (same as golf: I only watch the Ryder Cup because it’s us against the world). And as for Shibley, who is defending American Football as the “greatest sport in the world,” I have one word for you: OLYMPICS. Running is sport; soccer/football is a game. :-)
